Salt Spring Island Agricultural Alliance

Canada

Their purpose

The Salt Spring Island Agricultural Alliance is an independent, non-profit organization established in 2008 as one of the recommendations of the Local Area Farm Plan to carry out its implementation. The Alliance is made up of a network of organizations promoting local healthy food. They also advocate for local agricultural interests to all levels of government, and work to secure funding to support agricultural initiatives on Salt Spring Island.

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, the Alliance developed an emergency response and recovery plan, ensuring that the agricultural plan fits into the overall emergency response on the island. The draft plan seeks to address many risks arising from the pandemic including: food insecurity and financial instability of the island’s food producers and food infrastructure such as local markets, processing facilities, and distribution and storage systems.

Our collaboration

In order to ensure Salt Springs’ emergency agriculture response and recovery plan is as effective as possible, Community Evolution is funding a part-time role to implement the plan, directed by the Emergency Working Group. This new team member is focused on promoting public health and reducing virus transmission risk as it relates to local food production, increasing the production and availability of locally grown food, and ensuring a smooth transition to recovery.
